It is extremely important for your child to read at home. Find ways to include reading in your daily activities.
Make reading fun!
Suggested Activities:
- As you and your child read together, stop and discuss the story. Asking questions promotes a better understanding. (See additional resources for question ideas.)
- Take turns reading a book or magazine together. Hearing you read, helps your child hear the model of an adult reader. Talk about the different strategies you use while reading. (See additional resources for suggested "prompts" to say to your child when they get stuck on a word.)
- Listen to a book on tape while traveling! This can be a great shared listening experience.
- Take advantage of the local library. The Capital Area District Library (in Lansing) also has a wonderful selection of books. Check them out online at: www.cadl.org.
- If you travel, have your child collect brochures of the places you visit. These can be read before, during, or after your trip.
- Have your child read any stories they have written. These can be read independently or read aloud to others. Rereading helps develop fluency!
- Set a goal for reading (such as a number of minutes or books). These can be weekly or monthly goals. Children can get rewards for reaching their goals, such as a small treat or special activity.
- After reading a good book, share the information with someone through a book project. (See additional resources for some book projects suggestions.)
- Read for fun - read a recipe while cooking, read the directions for a game or project, read the menu while out to eat!
