Research is a part of science and social studies. Help your child do their own research by choosing a topic, asking questions, and finding the answers!
Suggested Activities:
- Students can create collections, such as a leaf collection, in scrapbooks. These are great starting points for writing! Student can include a written log with their collection or scrapbook that describes the materials. These collections can also encourage further reading and research.
- Many museums and zoos have exhibits that involve science or social studies concepts. This can be a great family outing! Some in Lansing include: Impressions Five, The Michigan Historical Museum, and the MSU Museum. Also check out locations in the Grand Rapids and Detroit area. The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, offer many opportunities to learn about Michigan's historical past. (See Additional Resources for websites.)
- To practice map skills, pull out a map when traveling in the car. Have your child read the map by finding objects such as the compass rose, map key, and various locations. Allow your child to find your travel route on the map.
