Suggested Activities:
- Students really enjoy computer games. There are many that deal with math concepts. One we use in school is Mighty Math. Students really enjoy this game and it covers many different math concepts at different levels. (See Additional Resources for math games to play online.)
- Write a book of math story problems using addition or subtraction. Solve the problems on the back of the pages to create an answer key and then have others try to solve the problems.
- Make flash cards of the basic addition and subtraction facts and practice them. (See Additional Resources for an online flashcard maker.)
- Make cards with problems and answers to play a memory game. To play: You will need to get a fact card and the answer card with the correct answer to collect a pair.
- Help with the cooking and measuring of ingredients. This is a great way to practice measuring.
- Keep track of the miles traveled when taking a trip. This could be on an extended trip or even a trip to the store! Children can also practice reading larger numbers on the odometer. They can use subtraction skills when figuring out the miles traveled.
- Practice counting money! Help your child count how much items will cost when shopping.
- Have your child count the loose change in your pocket - if they count it right, let them keep it!
- Keep an individual "bank account" of money earned and spent. Students could keep track of this money in a log like a checkbook, adding on money earned and subtracting money spent.
